     2007 Concerts

Many  of the CSO's programmes since 1897 are  documented in  "Musical Memoirs 1897-2004",  a compilation of selected past programmes of 25 local music societies by Winifred Stables (first right in photo).

A member of the orchestra for over fifty years,  since the 1950s Winifred participated or attended most of the concerts  listed in the booklet.  The compilation  is useful in programme planning and is a unique record of programmes as well as of conductors, leaders and soloists involved in over 100 years of  concerts of the CSO and other musical societies in the area.

Celebration and anniversary concerts such as  the Coronation Concert in 1953 and the Grand Centenary Concert in 1991 are included.  Dates on anniversary programmes help chart the existence of other musical organisations in the district.

CSO concerts of special interest have been added such as – in 1932, a concert, conducted by Norman Demuth, at which his own composition “Aubade for Contralto and Orchestra” was performed - the soloist being Freda Townson for whom the piece was expressly written; in 1978, the Concert of Music by Composers of Chichester which included the works of Weelkes (1573-1623), Clement Woodcocke (?-1599), John Marsh (1752-1828) and Gustav Holst (1874-1934); in 1985, a Rutland Boughton concert, conducted by Michael Hurd - this concert with Opera 70 was a contribution to a season of “British Opera in Retrospect” and in 2002, the unique 250th anniversary concerts to mark the birth of John Marsh (1752-1828) including those given by the Consort of Twelve, the Baroque ensemble founded and directed by Ian Graham Jones, editor of the John Marsh Symphonies, in joint performances with Close Harmony and the Chichester Concert.

Programmes including more recent works of composers who are or were resident in the area have  been included such as Judith Bailey’s Tone Poem “Trencom” in 1981; Eric Coates’ Suite “From Meadow to Mayfair” in 1936 and “ The Dambusters” in 1977; Michael Hurd’s “Dance Diversions” (first performance, in 1972; Patrick Moore’s “Free Fall” first performance in 1991 at the Centenary concert and Ralph Willatt’s “Sussex Sketches” in 1999.
